Lesson
Autonomous Phase - What to Expect
– In the AUTONOMOUS or ADVANCED PHASE, skill performed at maximum
efficiency
– Performance is automatic
– Very little conscious thought/attention is required
– Asking performers at this high skill level to consciously focus on movement can
seriously disrupt performance, especially in high-speed activities
– A player’s motor program for generating correct movement is highly developed
and well-established in memory
– Players can now free up focus and concentrate on things other than technique
– The time and practice required to reach this stage depends on ability of
individual, complexity of task, learner’s previous movement experiences, and the
efficiency of the learning environment
– Some say it requires a minimum of 10 years and over 1 million repetitions
produce high-level performance in major sports
