Lesson
Pectoral/Shoulder Girdle Muscles-Actions
Attach scapula & clavicle to spine/rib cage
Main Roles:
-stabilize scapula when shoulder loaded
-move and position scapula for shoulder/arm motion
Action (Plane of Motion) | Retraction (Transverse) | Protraction (Transverse) | Elevation (Frontal) | Depression (Frontal) | Lateral /Forward Rotation (Frontal) | Medial /Backward Rotation (Frontal) |
Description of Motion | Scapula remains vertical. Its medial border approaches spine. ‘Bracing’ of shoulder. GLENOID FOSSA faces more laterally | Scapula moves forward around chest wall. ‘Rounding’ shoulders. GLENOID FOSSA faces more forward | Pectoral Girdle lifted upwards. ‘Shrugging’ shoulders | Pectoral Girdle pulled downwards. | Inferior angle of scapula moves laterally around chest wall, and clavicle makes scapula move upwards. | Returns scapula to resting position from lateral rotation |
